|discussion=<p>Hygrohypnum closteri is so unlike the main body of Hygrohypnum that it is surely ill-placed in the genus; the author and others have noted its Amblystegium-like appearance. The prostrate to somewhat ascending stems have distantly spaced leaves.</p>
