L. Fernald (1921) recognized three species of Lophiola: L. aurea in the southeastern United States, L. americana in New Jersey and Delaware, and L. septentrionalis in Nova Scotia. Pending more detailed studies, only one species is recognized here. While the genus is retained in the Haemodoraceae in this treatment, recent research indicates that Lophiola is quite different from other Haemodoraceae and may be best placed in Liliaceae subfam. Melanthioideae (J. D. Ambrose 1985), Tecophilaeaceae (R. M. T. Dahlgren et al. 1985), or Nartheciaceae (W. B. Zomlefer 1997).</p> |tables= |references= }}<!-- --><!-- -->{{#Taxon: name=Lophiola |authority=Ker Gawler |rank=genus |parent rank=family |synonyms= |basionyms= |family=Haemodoraceae |distribution=North America |reference=None |publication title=Bot.
