It also grows in southern South America. The genus is sometimes included in Deschampsia, from which it differs in having loosely cespitose shoots and leaves that are usually mostly cauline, rather than mostly basal as in the perennial species of Deschampsia. The rachilla is prolonged beyond the upper floret for less than 0.5 mm in Vahlodea and is usually glabrous or has only a few hairs. In Deschampsia, the rachilla is usually prolonged more than 0.5 mm and is usually densely pubescent with long hairs. The caryopses of Vahlodea are ellipsoid, irregularly triangular or ovate in cross section, deeply grooved, and with a hilum 1/4-1/2 the length of the caryopsis. In Deschampsia, the caryopses are narrowly ellipsoid to fusiform, elliptic or ovate in cross section, grooved or not, and with a hilum 1/10-1/3 the length of the caryopsis.</p> |tables= |references={{Treatment/Reference |id=haraldsen1991a |text=Haraldsen, K.B., M. 0degaard, and I.
