Stems 80–450 mm. Rhizomes 3–5 mm diam. Leaves on mid portions of emergent shoots in whorls of 3–5 (or 6), oblanceolate or oblong to broadly obovate, 6–15 × 2–8 mm, midvein inconspicuous, lateral-veins present, sometimes obscure, ape× obtuse, rounded, or blunt, tip not curled in dried plants. Flowers bisexual; filaments equal to or shorter than anthers. Drupes 1.8–2 × 0.6–1.2 mm. 2n = 32.


Phenology: Flowering summer.
Habitat: Saline or brackish lagoons and pools of maritime coastlines.
Elevation: 0 m.

Discussion

The leaves of Hippuris tetraphylla tend to be fleshy or leathery, which is typical of obligate halophytes.
