Discussion

There have been no collections or reports of var. stricta since 1975 (Heckard, Chuang & Baciagalupi 4054, JEPS); it may be extinct. The few specimens of this variety are from the west slope of the Sierra Nevada, either in the foothills or the lower fringe of Pinus ponderosa woodland. Compared to other varieties, var. stricta is more glandular and the corolla is more darkly hued, especially distally. Purplish coloration is relatively rare in other varieties. The throat is slightly elongated relative to the other varieties.
