Discussion

Variety caespitosus is the northern element of the species, occurring in much of western Colorado (Chaffee, Eagle, Grand, Gunnison, Jackson, Mesa, Moffat, Park, Rio Blanco, and Routt counties), extreme northeastern Utah (Daggett, Duchesne, Rich, Uintah, and Wasatch counties), and southwestern Wyoming (Carbon, Lincoln, Sublette, Sweetwater, and Uinta counties). The variety is sympatric with var. perbrevis in Duchesne and Uintah counties, Utah. Indument varies considerably throughout the range of this variety, with glabrate forms not unusual (D. D. Keck 1937).
