Flowers: staminode 10–12 × (0.2–) 0.5–1 mm, distal 4–7 mm densely villous, hairs to 1.5 mm. 2n = 16.


Phenology: Flowering May–Jul(–Aug).
Habitat: Sandy to gravelly sagebrush shrubland, pinyon-juniper, Gambel oak, ponderosa pine, and bristlecone pine woodlands.
Elevation: 1200–3100 m.

Discussion

Variety congestus is known from the Uinta Basin of northeastern Utah to the Grand Canyon Plateau of Arizona and to the Calcareous Mountains of east-central Nevada.
