Stems retrorsely hairy, sometimes also glandular-pubescent distally or wholly. Leaves glabrous or retrorsely hairy abaxially, retrorsely hairy and, sometimes, sparsely villous adaxially. Flowers: corolla lavender to violet, ventricose-ampliate, 18–25 mm, not constricted at orifice; pollen-sacs navicular to subexplanate, 1.2–1.9 mm; staminode: distal 4–5 mm moderately lanate, hairs yellow, to 3 mm; style 9–14 mm. 2n = 16.


Phenology: Flowering May–Jul.
Habitat: Sandy or gravelly soils, sagebrush shrublands.
Elevation: 600–2700 m.

Discussion

Variety redactus occurs largely in the Salmon River Basin in Idaho (Butte, Clark, Custer, Idaho, and Lemhi counties), southwestern Montana (Beaverhead, Deer Lodge, Madison, and Silverbow counties), and northeastern Oregon (Wallowa County).
