Flowers: corolla glabrous internally; pollen-sac sides sparsely to moderately lanate-villous.

Phenology: Flowering Jun–Aug.
Habitat: Pinyon-juniper and birch-maple woodlands.
Elevation: 1600–2200 m.

Distribution

Ariz., Colo., N.Mex., Utah.

Discussion

F. S. Crosswhite (1965) hypothesized that var. trichander is the product of hybridization and introgression between Penstemon barbatus and P. strictus; Crosswhite noted that var. trichander occurs where var. torreyi and P. strictus are sympatric. Variety trichander is concentrated in the Four Corners region.
