Leaves opposite, cauline (7–) 10–35 (–52) × 2.5–8 (–14) mm, blade lanceolate, sometimes oblanceolate, spatulate, or ovate, margins obscurely to sharply serrate, sometimes entire. Flowers: calyx lobes ovate to lanceolate, 2.3–4.6 × 0.7–1.5 mm, apex acute to acuminate; corolla 10–12 (–15) mm, glabrate or glandular-pubescent externally, glabrous internally, or glabrate or glandular-pubescent abaxially and glabrous adaxially, abaxial lobes brown, sometimes white to ochroleucous; staminode glabrous, sometimes distal 1–2 mm sometimes sparsely pilose, hairs yellow, to 0.5 mm.


Phenology: Flowering May–Jul.
Habitat: Rocky and talus slopes, sagebrush shrublands, pinyon-juniper woodlands, coniferous forests.
Elevation: 900–3000 m.

Calif., Nev., Oreg., Utah.

Discussion

Fresh abaxial corolla lobes usually are brown in var. pedicillatus, and the abaxial lobes sometimes dry distinctly darker than the abaxial lobes.
