Leaves whorled, sometimes opposite or subopposite, cauline 11–48 × (0.5–) 1–5 mm, blade oblanceolate or lanceolate to linear, margins serrate to serrulate distally or entire. Flowers: calyx lobes ovate to lanceolate, 2.8–4.5 × 0.8–1.6 mm, apex acute to acuminate; corolla 10–12 (–15) mm, glandular-pubescent externally, glandular-pubescent internally, abaxial lobes white to ochroleucous, sometimes tinged lavender; staminode: distal 0.5 mm sparsely villous, hairs white, to 0.5 mm. 2n = 32.


Phenology: Flowering Jun–Jul.
Habitat: Gravelly slopes, streambeds.
Elevation: 600–2600 m.

Discussion

Variety variabilis occurs from southern Washington to central and eastern Oregon. Populations are most concentrated in the Blue Mountains.
