Herbs villous, at least proximally, also glandular puberulent. Stems 5–40 cm. Leaves: blade lateral lobes poorly developed, small or absent, terminal lobe lanceolate, to 4 × 2 cm, margins irregularly dentate. Flowers opening at sunset; buds with conspicuous, subapical free tips; floral-tube orangebrown inside, 3.5–5 mm; petals yellow, fading brick-red, 3–5 mm. 2n = 14.


Phenology: Flowering Mar–Apr.
Habitat: Sandy flats, with Ambrosia dumosa, Carnegiea gigantea, and Larrea.
Elevation: 60–400 m.

Discussion

Subspecies rubescens is known from western Maricopa, eastern Pima, and southeastern Yuma counties, Arizona, and northwestern Sonora. It intergrades with subsp. peeblesii and hybridizes with Chylismia brevipes subsp. arizonica.
