Discussion

Variety devestitum is the tetraploid race of the species, found only in the western half of the Florida panhandle (J. C. Semple 1984). Its involucre tends to be larger than that of diploid var. concolor. Sparsely hairy-leaved individuals occur in southern Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. They may prove to belong in var. devestitum.
