Leaves relatively less firm, basal tapering, glabrous. cypselae strigillose (at least distally).

Habitat: Open woods, woodland borders, piney woods, open slopes, roadsides and embankments

Discussion

Variety caroliniana is found predominantly in the southern Appalachians to the Atlantic Coast and south into peninsular Florida.
