Plants perennial, monoecious or dioecious, prostrate. Leaves typically with Kranz anatomy, alternate or opposite, sessile; blade widest from base to beyond middle, margin entire. Staminate flowers in axillary glomerules. Fruiting bracteoles monomorphic, sessile or short stipitate, ovate, almost distinct, margin entire or dentate, faces unappendaged. Seeds: radicle superior or lateral (in A. californica).
