Shrubs, 0.1–7 m. Buds alba, arctica, or caprea-type, or intermediate. Leaves: stipules on late ones minute rudiments or foliaceous; largest medial blade (sometimes amphistomatous), 1.2–7 times as long as wide, adaxial surface not glaucous. Staminate flowers: filaments glabrous or hairy. Pistillate flowers: adaxial nectary shorter than, equal to, or longer than stipe; stipe 0–3.5 mm; ovary glabrous or sparsely to very densely hairy; stigmas with flat, non-papillate abaxial surface, cylindrical, or plump, 0.1–0.8 mm.

This section was treated by R. D. Dorn (1975) as sect. Cordatae. In 1995, he recognized two subsections: Cordatae and Luteae. These two subsections are treated here as sections Hastatae and Cordatae, respectively.
