Stems distinctly spreading-hirsute. 2n = 18.

Habitat: Dry woods
Elevation: 400–700 m

Discussion

Variety palmeri largely replaces var. ulmifolia in the mountains of Arkansas. It is disjunct in southern Missouri and Mississippi. Reports from Alabama and Virginia need confirmation.
