Shrubs, erect, (5-) 8-15 (-30) dm, weakly rhizomatous, (main growth carried out by shoots other than those that bear flowers, bud composed of 2 partially fused prophylls). Leaves deciduous. Inflorescences solitary flowers in leaf-axils, borne toward ends of shoots of current season. Pedicels continuous with calyx-tube. Flowers: sepals 4; petals 4, slightly connate basally, corolla broadly cylindric; stamens 8, exserted; anthers without awns, tubules 3-5 mm. Berries 4-locular (20-25 ovules per locule). Seeds 10-20.
