Shrubs or trees (evergreen), 50–300+ cm. Stems erect, glabrous or ± tomentose [spiny]. Leaves ± petiolate; blades ovate or elliptic to orbiculate, obovate, or oblanceolate, margins usually denticulate, sometimes entire, faces usually ± arachnose and glabrate, sometimes woolly or glabrous. Heads borne singly or in loose, corymbiform arrays. Involucres ± hemispheric or broader, 9–12+ mm diam. Phyllaries 12–24+ in 2–3 series, deltate or lanceolate to ovate, oblong, or linear. Receptacles flat to convex. Ray-florets 5–13 in 1 series; corollas yellow, laminae ± ovate to elliptic or linear. Disc-florets 30–80+, functionally staminate; corollas yellow, tubes (± pilosulous) shorter than ± campanulate throats. Cypselae ± globose, fleshy (blue-black, becoming brown, drupelike). x = 10.
