Leaf-blades 5–150 (–250) × 2–25 (–35+) mm. Peduncles 2–5 (–15+) cm. Phyllaries (incurved in fruit), abaxial faces glabrous or scabrous to hispid. Cypselae 5–7.5 mm; pappi 0.1–0.5 (–1) or 2–5 mm. 2n = 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18 (all Europe).
Phenology: Flowering (Mar–)Apr–May(–Aug).
Habitat: Disturbed sites
Elevation: 0–100(–600+) m
