Discussion
Variety colpophilus is restricted to St. Lawrence River estuaries in Quebec and nearby drainages in Maine and Vermont. F. W. Pennell (1935) speculated that the flowers might be cleistogamous; this apparently has not been verified. Tentative evidence supporting the distinction of var. colpophilus was presented by J. L. Stone and B. A. Drummond (2006); most other floristic summaries have treated it as an informal variant of Mimulus ringens.
