Perennials, to 115+ cm; taprooted. Leaves 1.6–14 × 1–6.5 cm, 2-pinnatifid to lyrate-pinnate, lobes 3–10, narrowly linear-lanceolate to narrowly ovate, 0.8–4.5 mm wide, faces hirsute and glanddotted. Heads 1–12+, held well beyond leaves. Peduncles 14–45+ cm (ribs tan, prominent). Phyllaries 7–14, outer linear, 6–12 × 0.8–1.5 mm, inner lanceovate, 1–5 × 0.8–1.5 mm. Paleae 3–4.3 × 1.5–3 mm, resin-glands oval, 1–1.8 mm. Ray-florets 4–14; corollas yellow, purplish yellow, or maroon, often bicolor (maroon/yellow), laminae mostly ovate to elliptic, 5–15 × 4–12 mm. Discs columnar, 15–70 × 8–13 mm. Disc-florets 200–400+; corollas greenish yellow, often purplish distally, 2.5–3 mm; style-branches ca. 1.8 mm, proximal 1/2 stigmatic, apices subulate. Cypselae oblong, 2.3–5 × 1.2–3 mm, abaxial margins narrowly winged to fimbriate or pectinate-fimbriate, adaxial margins pectinate-fimbriate; pappi (tan) of 1–2 toothlike projections.
