Plants 5.5–21.5 cm. Leaves: basal: petiole 2.6–13.8 cm; blade usually narrowly to broadly ovate, sometimes oblong-lanceolate to ± orbiculate or ± elliptic, 1.7–5.9 (–7.3) × 0.8–3.3 cm, length 1.1–3 times width, base ± truncate to subcordate, margins ± crenate to serrate or entire; cauline similar to basal except: petiole 1.7–11.5 cm; blade 2.3–5.8 (–6.7) × 1.1–3.5 cm. Peduncles 4.4–16.5 cm. Lowest petal 12–15 (–18) mm. Capsules 6–11 mm. Seeds dark-brown. 2n = 36.

Habitat: Vernally moist slopes and banks, meadows, grassy areas, open forests, sagebrush, shade or open areas
Elevation: 100–2500 m

Discussion

In British Columbia, var. praemorsa is known only from southeastern Vancouver Island and adjacent Saltspring Island (G. W. Douglas and M. Ryan 1998).
