Trees, sometimes shrublike; unarmed. Leaves opposite, simple or pinnately compound; stipules caducous, free; venation pinnate. Flowers: perianth and androecium perigynous; epicalyx bractlets (1 or) 2 or 3; hypanthium hemispheric; torus absent; carpels 2 (or 3), distinct, free, styles terminal, distinct; ovules 2–4+, nearly apical, pendulous, clustered. Fruits aggregated follicles; styles tardily falling.

The base chromosome number for Lyonothamneae is x = 9. Cyanogenic glycosides are absent from Lyonothamnus.
