Leaves ± coriaceous, petiole 4–9 mm proximally; cauline blade 1.5–6.2 × 0.7–2.2 cm. Flowers: sepals bright red, 5–7 × 2–2.5 mm; petals magenta to light pink, 8–10 (–11) × 3–6 mm. Capsules 35–55 mm. Seeds 0.9–1.6 × 0.4–0.5 mm, surfaces reticulate (smooth). 2n = 36.


Phenology: Flowering Jun–Aug.
Habitat: Moist meadows, seeps, stream banks, mossy or rocky crevices, usually coastal.
Elevation: 0–500 m.

Distribution

B.C., Yukon, Alaska, Asia (Russian Far East)

Discussion

Subspecies behringianum is a very distinctive coastal variant of the species, essentially replacing it in mari­time areas from northern British Columbia, including Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands), through Pacific coastal Alaska, and in similar habitats along the northwestern Pacific coast in Russia.
