Trees, to 15 (-20) m, with solitary trunks. Leaves: petiole (2-) 3-5 (-8) mm. Leaf-blade 50-120 (-140) × (20-) 25-60 mm. Acorns: cup very shallowly saucer-shaped and flat abaxially and adaxially to shallowly cup-shaped with constricted bases, 2-5 mm deep × (9-)10-15(-20) mm wide, enclosing 1/4 nut or less; nut subrotund to ovoid or elliptic, 12-15 (-18) × 8-12 (-17) mm.


Phenology: Flowering spring.
Habitat: Low wet areas, hummocks, riparian and limestone bluffs and prairies
Elevation: 0-400 m
