Shrubs 0.2–2 m. Stems decumbent to prostrate. Leaves: petiole 1–3 mm; blade oblongelliptic to elliptic-obovate, 1.5–4 (–6) × 1–2 (–3.5) cm, base rounded, margins entire or remotely serrulate, apex obtuse to rounded, sometimes mucronate.
Phenology: Flowering early spring–summer; fruiting summer–winter.
Habitat: Coastal prairies, marshes, clay or sand-clay mounds, often saline sites.
Elevation: 1–10 m.

Discussion
In the flora area, var. ovalifolia occurs along the Gulf coast of Texas from Cameron to Nueces counties.
