Discussion

Variety atratus apparently is limited to the La Sal Mountains of Grand County. N. H. Holmgren (1984) stated that some specimens of var. crandallii from the Abajo Mountains of San Juan County, Utah, approach var. atratus in leaf indument. Within populations of var. atratus, leaf indument varies from densely to sparsely puberulent.
