Stems decumbent, 0.7–7.5 dm. Leaves: stipules 5–15 (–23) × (3.5–) 5.5–10 (–15) mm; blade (1–) 2–8.5 × 1.5–9.5 cm, sinuses between lobes of cauline leaves extending to within 5–15 mm of petiole. Involucellar bractlets 6–17.5 × 1.5–3.5 mm. Petals usually reddish purple with white basal spot, rarely white, (1.5–) 1.9–3.2 cm (male sterile 0.8–2 cm). Mericarps hairy, hairs simple. 2n = 30, 60.
Phenology: Flowering spring–early fall.
Habitat: Plains, prairies, waste places, along roads
Elevation: 200–1500 m

Discussion
Variety involucrata is introduced in Arizona, central Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, eastern Iowa, eastern Missouri, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
