Plants annual or perennial, rhizomatous or not. Leaves: distal leaf-sheaths without a tooth. Achenes prominent, apex often constricted proximal to tubercle. Tubercles not dorsiventrally compressed, similar in cross-section to achene.

Tropical to temperate latitudes worldwide, primarily neotropical
